WHAT IS STROKE?

The sudden death of brain cells due to lack of oxygen, caused by:
1. blockage of blood flow or
2. rupture of an artery to the brain.

Which results to loss of speech, weakness or paralysis of one side of the body.

What are the main causes of stroke?

There are two main causes of stroke: a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Some people may have only a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), that doesn't cause lasting symptoms.

A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Strokes are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential. The sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen.

The three main types of stroke are:
  1. Ischemic stroke.
  2. Hemorrhagic stroke.
  3. Transient ischemic attack (a warning or “mini-stroke”).
The five warning signs of stroke are:
  1. Sudden onset of weakness or numbness on one side of the body.
  2. Sudden speech difficulty or confusion.
  3. Sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes.
  4. Sudden onset of dizziness, trouble walking or loss of balance.
  5. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.
